Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by skilled craftsmen using a wealth of detail, this 1/24-scale model G-5/FF-1 makes a great gift for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff. The G-5/FF-1, known as FiFi, served frontline Navy units for only three years, but marked the entry of a long line of Grumman Aircraft to the service. Powered by a 700-horsepower Wright R-1820 Cyclone, the CG-5/FF-1 could reach speeds of 201 mph, faster than any other Navy fighter of the day. Armament consisted of two ,30-caliber machine guns and 100 pounds of bombs. After being withdrawn from line units, the FF-1s continued to fly until the late 1930s, with some being re-equipped with dual controls and used as trainers. |
