Its easy to mix the colored repair compound to match your floor. Simply apply the compound to the damaged area, cover it with the proper grain/ texture paper, provided in the kit, and heat. The compound cures to a hard finish that duplicates the vinyl floor.

Some floors have a multi-colored effect. Our kit shows you how to repair them. You just apply the basic underlying color, then dab the other color or colors over the base color. Apply the grain/texture paper and heat. It is that simple!

Always make a practice repair before beginning your job. Use the practice piece of vinyl included in this kit. This vinyl is located in the grain paper packet. Cut a hold in the practice vinyl, put a piece of transparent tape behind it, and practice repairing the hole you created.

PREPARE THE DAMAGE Clean the damaged spot with any average cleaner. Trim off any torn edges, frays or threads with a common razor knife. If there is a depression under the damage, fill it in with common cotton wadding or cotton ball material so that the damaged spot is level to the undamaged material.

BACKING CLOTH A piece of cloth in the kit is used as a support under the damaged spot. Very minor repairs do not require this backing support. Cut the backing fabric approx. 1/4 inch larger than the damage and insert it into and under the damage.

APPLYING THE REPAIR COMPOUND Use the white plastic spatula to apply compound. The 7 colors in the kit are the repair compound colors. If one is a close match to your material, use it directly. If you have to mix your color, follow the color mixing guide on the reverse side of these instructions. Apply the repair compound as evenly as possible into the damaged area, removing the excess, but leaving a very thin film on the undamaged vinyl. Smooth application is very important for a quality repair job.

NOTE: The repair compound will produce a flexible repair. For stiffer repairs, or when repairing ridged surfaces, mix in the Powdered Hardener, and follow instructions for using grain paper and heat tool to cure the repair.

GRAIN PAPER Select one of the grain papers, keeping “this side up”, draw a circle in the center of the grain paper the size of the repair area, and place the paper directly on top of the repair compound you have just applied, with the printed side up.

HEATING THE GRAIN PAPER The correct application of heat is critical to a quality, lasting repair job. The compound must be heated to 300 degrees for the compound to cure. Heat up home iron or electric stove top at highest setting. Allow to warm up for 3-5 minutes. Use your stove top or iron to heat the metal tip of the heat transfer tool (wood dowel with metal tip) by holding the metal tip of the tool against the heating element until red hot, and immediately place it on the circle you drew on the grain paper. Move the tool in a rapid, circular motion for 5-10 seconds, keeping it on the grain paper which covers the repair compound. The heat must transfer through the grain paper onto the repair compound to get a strong repair job. Make certain the tip of the heat tool only touches the grain paper, not the vinyl. Keep the tip moving in a circular motion so that you have an even repair. Remove heating tool, but allow grain paper to cool for 2-3 minutes before moving to the next step.

FINISHING Allow the grain paper to cool, then slowly peel the grain off. If you see the compound still in a liquid, soft state, place the grain paper back down and reheat the repair compound. If you peel off the grain paper and see areas which are not filled or grained properly, simply apply more color repair compound, then grain paper, and reheat. If your color is not exact or needs improvement, you can purchase a ColorizeTM kit to touch up the repair. If you need to improve the gloss over the repair, common vinyl floor wax is suitable for this purpose. To improve the sheen of the repair, ensure the repair is cool and entirely cured, then apply a small amount of floor wax onto a rag and lightly wipe over the repair job.

TIPS For small repairs, 5 seconds of heating is sufficient. Large repairs require 10 seconds of heating. Do not allow tip of iron to touch anything other than the grain paper. keep the iron tip as close to the repair area as possible. Move iron in rapid circular motion when heating.
